In front of a smallish crowd at GWK Park and in overcast, warm conditions, GWK Griquas got the last of the Vodacom Cup round robin section match off to a good start. Griffons opened the scoring in the 5th minute with a Hugo Kleynhans penalty, but this lead was short lived when four minutes later, from a line out 5 meters from the Griffons try line, Egon Seconds went over for the first try of the match, converted by Naas Olivier to give the home side the edge 7-3. Griquas second try came via Gavin Passens, converted by Olivier, in the 11th minute, increasing Griquas lead to 14-3. Six minutes later, Naas Olivier, Griquas fly half, went over to score a self converted try, taking the score to 21-3. It was not until the half hour was up that Griquas scored their bonus point try, when Richard Lawson scored under the posts, from a full back line movement, 28-3. But on the stroke of half time, Brendon Snyman burst his way over from a line out, converted by Olivier to take the score to 42-10 at the break.
Griffons got the second half under way and in the second minute, full back, Cecil Afrika kicked the ball ahead and gathered it to score far out, converted by Hugo Kleynhans. Two minutes later, Griquas returned the compliment, when Brendon Snyman barged over for his second try, conversion hit the upright, score 47-17. In the 9th minute of the seond half, Trompie Nonthshinga, who replaced Gavin Passens on the wing ran 30 meters to score far out, very well converted by Olivier, score 54-17, but in the 15th minute, it was Griffon’s, Cecil Afrika’s turn, once again to score under the posts, after a lapse in the Griqua defence, converted by Petrie Kunz, 54-24. Ten minutes later, Virgil Russell, Griffon’s wing, scored 6 meters in from touch, neatly converted by left footer Kunz, score 54-31, however two minutes later, Steph Roberts, ran all of 25 meters to dot down for Olivier to convert, score 61-31. In the 36th minute, replacement scrum half, Danny Theron scored for the home team, converted by Olivier and a minute later, Naas Olivier went over under the posts, converted by himself. But Griquas were not finished yet as Richard Lawson scored his second try, which went unconverted, but on the stroke of the final hooter, Hanno Coetzee went over for the final try, converted by Olivier, giving Olivier a total of 42 points in the match, Griquas ending on 87 and Griffons on 31.
