Gwk Griquas had the better of neighbours, at Free State’s Vodacom Park stadium, Free State Cheetahs in their opening match in the 2009 Currie Cup season, to the tune of 28-18, half time, 7-6, to the visitors and collected a full house of 5 points for their effort.
The twelfth minute of the match saw Griquas, Heinrich Stride, open the scoring with a try, the first of the 4 tries, converted by Naas Olivier. The next points to show on the board, was a penalty by Free State’s flyhalf, Jacques-Louis Potgieter, in the 31 st minute, which he repeated on the stroke of half time, thus giving Griquas the single point edge at the break.
However, in the 10th minute of the second half, Lionel Mapoe scored the Cheetah’s first try, which went unconverted, but now, with Free State turning on the pressure, with WP Nel running in a try, converted by Louis Strydom, in the 16th minute, the match was on, score 18-7, to Cheetahs. Griquas, from now on seemed to have received a wake up call, after scrum half, Sarel Pretorius was yellow carded, he came back, scoring a converted try, two minutes after Nel had scored his. Four minutes later, centre, Barry Geel, playing in his first match of the season scored a Olivier, converted try, before Bjorn Basson scored the forth and last try, converted by Naas Olivier and put Griquas in an unsailable position, which they held on to until the final whistle.
