The Currie Cup match at Absa Stadium in Durban between the Natal Sharks and GWK Griquas on Saturday afternoon, was definitely not a good one for the visitors, as there were far too many mistakes made. Among these were, far too many turn overs, no ball retention, too many missed tackles and a lot of knock-on s, and in the first half some ill discipline.
The Sharks drew first blood in the 7th minute of the match with a well taken penalty by Monty Dumond, which he repeated 9 minutes later, putting the Sharks 6 nil up. They went even further ahead when center, Waylon Murray, picked up a loose ball from a mistake made by Griquas, ran all of 50 meters before dotting down and being converted by Dumond, in the 25th minute of the match. Four minutes later, Griquas Naas Olivier kicked a penalty, narrowing the deficit to 10 points, score 13-3, with Olivier repeating that exercise six minutes later, taking the score to 13-6. Four minutes from the half way break, Shark’s Charl McLeod scored his teams second try, converted by Dumond, making the score 20 to Sharks and 6 to GWK Griquas at half time.
Unfortunately, Griquas were unable to score any points in the second half and it was the Sharks all the way, who scored a further 3 tries in the process as well as earning themselves a bonus point. Seven minutes into the half, Monty Dumond scored a try, which he converted, stretching the Shark’s lead even further. Shark’s other try scorers were Lwazi Myoyo in the 23rd minute, and completing the try scoring was Keegan Daniel, in the 31st minute, converted by Dumond.
