GWK Griquas beat Boland Cavaliers in their own back yard, Wellington, in their return round of Currie Cup, last Friday, by 31 to 23, (half time score 21 to Griquas and 9 to Boland), collecting 5 valuable points, in the process. In the first round of the competition, Griquas thrashed Boland 80-7 in Kimberley. Although Boland dominated the first 15 to 20 minutes of the game, Griquas came back strongly, scoring 5 tries in all to Boland’s 2.
After losing three matches on the trot and nearly losing out to Leopards, which Griquas won by a solitary point, they now seem to be on the road to recovery, with their next fixture against the Lions on Saturday afternoon, at a changed venue, Diamantveld High School’s headquarters, as Bafana will be making use of GWK Park against Madagascar. Should Griquas beat the Lions, which the public of Kimberley will be keenly watching, they will remain on course for their semi final berth, but will have to iron out, amongst other small problems, the question of far too many missed tackles.
Boland’s, Justin Peach put the home side into a 6 nil lead, in the first 15 minutes of the match, but this was short lived as Barry Geel went over for a Naas Olivier converted try, to snatch the lead. Peach responded with another penalty, seeing the lead return to Boland, until Willmaure Louw crossed the line, giving the visitors the lead once again, which they held on to for the rest of the match. Rohan Kitshoff scored Griquas try just before half time, converted by Olivier, taking the score to 21-9, in favour of GWK Griquas, at the break.
After the start of the second half, it was the turn of Naas Olivier, who scored the bonus point try for Griquas, converted by himself, and towards the end of the match, it was winger, Trompie Nonthsinga, who sealed the match for the vistors. However, just before the final whistle, George Earl scored Boland’s second try, to narrow the winning margin to only eight points, but unfortunately not low enough for the bonus point.
