The Golden Lions thrashed GWK Griquas in Johannesburg on Friday by 45 points to 5, ie 6 tries to 1, in a Vodacom Cup match, the half time score was 11 nil to the home side.
Opening the scoreline, was ex Griqua flyhalf, Herkie Kruger, who succeeded with a penalty, early in the match and this was followed 16 minutes later by another Kruger penalty, putting the Lions 6 nil up. With two minutes left in the half, Pieter Engelbrecht went over for the first try of the match, taking the score to 11 nil at the break. Griquas however played, judging by the number of Lions players who went off for blood during the half.
Two minutes into the second half, Albertus Kriel scored his teams second try, with Herkie Kruger missing the conversion, but six minutes later, Gert Muller ran in the home team’s third try and two minutes later Griqua’s try was scored by Dewald Pretorius, which went unconverted, by Divan van Zyl, who also missed a number of penalties. In the 18th minute, Marius Delport ran in the bonus point try for the Lions, converted by Kruger. Kruger kicked another penalty in the 22nd minute, followed 4 minutes later by Rouan Cloete’s try converted by Kruger. With four minutes left in the match, Wikus van Heerden scored his try, converted by Kruger to seal the match, 45-5 and a full bag of 5 points.
