GWK Griquas thrashed SWD Eagles, in a pre Absa Currie Cup compulsory friendly, which should have been played at the D’Almeida Stadium in Mossel Bay on Friday, but was switched to the Oudshoorn Recreational Club at very short notice, due to the original field's surface declared unplayable, which however did NOT deter Griquas in any way as they steamrollered their opposition by 50 points to 12, 8 tries to 2, with the halftime score on 17-5.
Wesley Wilkins, Griqua’s flanker, opened the scoring in the 5th minute of the match, with a try, converted by Naas Olivier. The next points on the board came only in the 24th minute, when ex Griqua, Baldwin McBean crossed the tryline for an unconverted try, but, two minutes later, Riaan Viljoen went over for Griqua’s second try, Olivier missing the conversion. With four minutes left to the halftime break, Warren Malgas went over for his try, once again ,Olivier missing the conversion, putting Griquas in the lead 17-5 at halftime.
Four minutes into the second half, Griqua’s wing, Bjorn Basson crossed the line for the first of his two tries, the second coming 8 minutes sfter first, only the first try being converted by Nass Olivier, stretching the lead to a 24 point deficit. However, during the next twenty to twenty seven minutes, Griquas turned on the pressure again scoring three more converted tries, via, Matt Rosslee, Ryno Barnes and Frederik Spies, Olivier adding the 6 pooints to his tally, taking the score to 50 points to 5. With four minutes left in the match, Eagles scored a consolation try, thanks to Marchell Potts, converted by Jandré Blom, adding 7 points to SWD’s score a taking their total to 12.
