In the second round of the 2010 Absa Currie Cup, the Vodacom Cheetahs outplayed GWK Griquas by winning the match by 33 points to 26, thus collecting 5 points to Griqua’s 1.
Griquas won the toss and elected to kick off, with the first points coming on the board in the 8th minute when Robert Ebersohn intercepted a pass from Sarel Pretorius to score the first try of the match, converted by Louis Strydom. Three minutes later Griquas captain and flyhalf, Naas Olivier, pulled back the score to 7-3 with a well struck penalty, for Cheetahs not rolling away. The next points on the board came only in the 26th minute, when Griqua’s fullback, Riaan Viljoen, kicked a 52 meter penalty from just inside Griqua’s half, narrowing the gap to a single point. Seven minutes for the halftime break, Cheetahs prop, Coenie Oosthuizen and man of the match, scored the first of his three tries in the match with a push over try, converted by Strydom, taking the halftime score to Cheetahs 14 and Griquas 6.
Oosthuizen scored his second try two minutes into the second half, another push over try, assisted by his fellow forwards converted by Strydom, stretching the lead to 21-6. In the 8th minute, winger, Bjorn Basson ran in his try, from a set scrum just outside the Cheetah’s 22 meter, without a finger being laid on him, converted by Olivier, taking the score to 21-13, but Cheetahs went further ahead when winger, Jongi Nokwe, scored far out, which went unconverted, this due to poor defensive work on the part of Griquas. However four minutes later, Naas Olivier struck back with a penalty, but oosthuizen ran in his third try, converted by Louis Strydom, once again though poor Griqua defence, taking the score to Cheetahs 22 and Griquas 16. With five minutes left in the game, Griquas took a quick long throw in from a lineout, straight to Sarel Pretorius who scored a converted try, taking the visitors to within 10 points. But, on the final whistle Griquas were given a penalty in front, which Olivier made no mistake with to give Griquas a bonus point from the match, with the home side winning 33-26.
The match itself was played in great spirit by both teams, but the Vodacom Cheetahs were the better team on the night.
