GWK Griquas hosted the Lions at GWK Park on Saturday afternoon in a third round Currie Cup fixture, with the visitors kicking off, against the wind in the first half, in front of a large crowd of about 3000 spectators.
The 10th minute saw the first points come on the score board when Lion’s scrumhalf, Jano Vermaak, ran through the Griquas defence, to dot down far out, but Herkie Kruger made no mistake with the conversion putting the visitors in an early 7 nil lead. However the next points only came in the 18th minute when the Lions were penalised for a high tackle, 8 meters in from touch and 23 meters out, converted by Naas Olivier, narrowing the gap to 4 points, score 7-3 to the Lions. After missing a long range penalty in the 26th minute by Naas Olivier, Riaan Viljoen, the Griqua fullback attempted one two minutes later, which unfortunately hit the upright. With six minutes left in the first half, Lions George Earle scored their second try, from a tap and go penalty, in the near corner, converted by Kruger, taking the score to 14 for the Lions and 3 to Griquas. On halftime Griquas were awarded a penalty for pulling down, which Olivier succeeded in kicking over, taking the halftime score to 14-6, in the favour of the visitors.
Griquas started the second half, against the wind, but in the first minute Lions were awarded a penalty on the halfway line, which Herkie Kruger succeeded with, score 17-6. In the 4th minute, Jacobie Adriaanse scored a pushover try near the posts which Olivier has no problem in converting, narrowing the gap to just 4 points, 17-13. Griquas took the lead in the 19th minute, when Bjorn Basson scored in the near corner, very well converted by Olivier, score 20 to Griquas and 17 to the Lions, but 2 minutes later, Griquas could have increased their lead, but Viljoen missed a long range kick from just inside touch. A minute later, Griquas were awarded another penalty for offsides, and Olivier made no mistake, stretching the score to 23-17, to Griquas. In the 27th minute Lions were given a penalty for a deliberate knockon, 32 meters out in front of the posts with Herkie Kruger making no mistake, narrowing the score line to 3 points between the teams, 23-20. Olivier kicked another penalty 2 minutes after Kruger kicked his taking the score to 26-20, to the home side. Griquas thus deservedly winning the match by six points, by playing much better rugby in the second half, turning a 14-6 deficit into a 26-20 win, with Griquas prop forward, Jacobie Adriaanse being named Man of the Match.
