Griquas Nailed by the Bulls

 

Wildeklawer Griquas were well and truly beaten, 41-12, by the Blue Bulls at Loftus in a Currie Cup fixture on Friday night. Although Griquas played good hard rugby, they however failed to make use of their opportunities.

Griqua’s  center, Lafras Uys, playing in his fiftieth match, led the team on to the field. It took 16 minutes before the first points appeared on the board, after the Bulls got the match under way. The points came by way of a penalty to the Bulls kicked by Morne Steyn, when Griquas were caught playing the ball on the ground.

Shortly, before the penalty,  Wynand Olivier made a break and was well on his way to scoring, the Griqua’s defence held out. Five minutes later, Steyn succeeded in kicking another penalty, taking the score to six nil. However, three minutes later, Griquas were awarded a penalty, but unfortunately Tobie Botes missed, but a few minutes after that, Griquas were penalized in front of the posts for coming in on the wrong side, Steyn made no mistake, 9 nil at this stage.

The Bull’s  first try came whem Steyn chipped the ball into an open space, which was gathered by fullback, Tiger Mangweni, who dotted down next to the touchline, the conversion missed, taking the score to 14 nil.On the stroke of halftime, Griqua’s  fullback put through a grubber, collected by wing, MJ Mentz, who the visitors back into the match, halftime score 14-5. 

Within the first minute of the second half, Bull’s Deon Stegman broke away to score a converted try, stretching the lead to 21-5, but in the ninth minute, Tobie Botes chipped the ball through from inside his own 22 meter line, gathered it himself and ran 60 meters to score under the posts, which was easily converted by Riaan Viljoen, taking the score to 21-12.

 From then on, the home team turned on the pressure, when in the 12th minute , Griquas front row forward, Albertus Buckle was penalized for entering a scrum skew, and Steyn made no mistake, 24-12. However, two minutes later, Griquas were once again penalized, this time playing the ball on the ground in a ruck, Steyn again successful, 27-12. It was only 15 minutes later when the Bulls struck again, this time via a pushover try by Guthro Steenkamp and Morne Steyn making no mistake with the conversion, adding the seven points, 34-12.

The final nail in Griqua’s coffin, was on the final whistle, Dewald Potgieter, scored a pushover try, which was converted by Steyn, taking the final score to 41 to the Blue Bulls and 12 to Wildeklawer Griquas.
