Griquas nailed by Lions

Wildeklawer Griquas came a cropper on Saturday in their Currie Cup fixture against the Lions at Coca Cola Park when they were beaten 41-20.

Griquas fullback, Riaan Viljoen started the match and from the kick-off, Lion’s wing, Michael Killian rounded off a full backline movement, which ended in Killian dotting down for the first try of the match in the first minute, putting the home team 5 nil up. In the 14th minute, Griquas flyhalf, Conrad Barnard succeeded in kicking a 30 meter penalty to narrow the Lions lead to 2 points, 5-3. After playing aerial ping-pong, Lions flyhalf, Earl Rose sent a long pass out to  to Killian who ran in his second try of the match, in the 21st minute, which Rose converted, 12-3. Four minutes later, Barnard kicked another penalty for Griquas, score now 12-6.

Lions went further ahead via a penalty by Rose in the 30th minute, but three minutes later, Ross Geldenhuys powered his way over for a Rose converted try. But in the 36th minute, it was once again, Michael Killian who ran in his third try, after Griquas defence and first time tackling let them down, the try converted by Rose, taking the score to 29-6, the halftime score.

In the ninth minute of the second half, Lions captain Cobus Grobelaar dotted down in the corner for an unconverted try, after some good inter play between the forwards and the backs and once again poor defence on the part of Griquas, increasing the Lion’s  lead to 34-6. however, in the 22nd minute of the second half, Hans van Dyk, Griquas hooker took a quick tap penalty, catching the Lions napping to score a try, converted by Barnard, score 34-13. with five minutes left in the match, once again from a quick penalty taken by Griquas, saw Jacques Lombaard barged his way over under the posts, the conversion was no problem for Barnard, closing the gap to 34-20.  But with three minutes left, a simple movement by the Lions sent Doppies le Grange over for the final try, thus sealing the win for Lions after Louis Strydom convert, making the final score 41 to the Lions and 20 to Wildeklawer Griquas (six tries to 2).
